lThe Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival , Disney World , Orlando , Florida

Article image

so as to get ready for the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival , I had to comprehend out my summer apparel . I was invited to gift over leap shift for three sidereal day , doubly a day . My midday program was title ‘ Cooking Under the Influence : Using the Mediterranean Herbs in the Kitchen ’ and the 3 o’clock time slot was‘Not just desserts — sweet herbal recipe , ’ which is the title of one of my late cookery book which features using impertinent herbaceous plant in desserts and scorched goods . My daughters , Lucie who is 21 , and Cady who is 18 , play along me to Florida .

The heat knock down us as we left the Orlando aerodrome with our well-disposed Disney host ( who met us carry up a planetary house with my   name on it ) .   It felt like red-hot summer there and the atmosphere conditioner was on in the cable car . whiz by palm trees , palmettos , and roadside elderberry trees already in bloom , we arrived at the Beach Club Resort where the manicured , landscaped garden display bed of gaily colored flower annuals such as violas , snapdragon , and marigolds , along with rose bushes bordered by sculpted hedges of box and other humble - grow shrubs .   The general attire was sandals or flipflops , shorts and bathing suits , or sundresses . We sat outside on the medallion - shaded patio by the pool   alongside fragrant blooming gardenias and other tropical foliage sipping on rummy drinks , transported far from our Maryland spring weather , with night temporary worker still in the XXX .

For the next few solar day , we saw the raft of Disney World and Epcot Center with the multitudes of families on springiness break , go from parking lot to ballpark , wear bleb on our feet from all of the walk and “ glowing ” with the oestrus . My platform were well - attend — I had a very nice set up — with huge pots overflow with every variety of herbaceous plant that I ask for , and many more . I was amazed at the tumid number of attendees who lived and gardened   right there in Florida ; most of them had season pass to see the six - week long garden fete . Of naturally , growing herbs in the heat and humidness of Florida is entirely different than in my Maryland Zone 7 garden , and there were gardener   there from diverse climates and as far aside as Alaska , England , and even China .   There were many garden plots , peck plantings , and sight of large Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree throughout the park , and I was golden to meet many of the nurseryman who are apply at Epcot . The order of magnitude of the tasks of hold back the impressive garden looking perfect in the heat and humidty is mind - boggling .

I particularly get laid the topiary of Disney characters from Mickey and Minnie and Winnie - the - Pooh friends to fairies , teapot , and more ; the huge Draco create from exotic tropicals and bromeliads in the Chinese garden ; the tiered towboat of impatiens ; and the blooming avenue with masses of bright - coloured combinations of annuals with blossom shrubs .    I find out from the gardener that when it is time to change out a display , the gardeners arrive in after the ballpark close in the evening and work all night to slay and replant the display bed — and they have to be finished and altogether cleaned up before the parks reopen the next morning ! And these folks seem happy all of the time ! Each gardener is responsible for for lean various presentation bed throughout the dissimilar countries .   Of naturally , there is an amazing lacrimation organisation , not to advert greenhouses for generation and maintainance of a vast assortment of flora .

Wild Animal Kingdom

Article image

The girls and I stick around an extra day after my programs so that we could expend a daylight at the Wild Animal Kingdom Park and do the safari ride , which was pretty far out — the park was like a savannah with tearing golf hole for the elephants and crocodile and flamingos . We contract really snug to giraffes and ostrich and even a rhino ; they all just grazed about the plain . There were really cool immense termite cumulation and I like the baobob trees best with their huge wide luggage compartment that hold water in dry , desertlike stipulation . My girls went to rag the Everest roller coaster while I blend in into the Tree of Life attraction to see the three-D ‘ It ’s a hemipteron ’s Life Show ’ ( I screamed 3 times with the rest of the audience when big - than - aliveness insects made a beeline toward us at high speed ) . The almost everyday afternoon rain shower tout through and soaked us , and then everything was hot and steamy . We vaporize out in the heat of the night in our flipflops and sundresses , only to search for our sweatshirts as soon as we reached BWI .

Still Spring Back in Maryland

get home again , it was spring in full lilt , my plantings on my   daffodil hill were blooming at full tilt boogie-woogie .   I gathered many fragrance of them , put them round off the house , and partake them with friend and syndicate .   All the trees were lastly budding out and it was springtime in the woods with spicebush and dogwoods showing unripened bud ; no violet quite yet . pick chickweed and modest blowball leave behind for an omelet . Yum . When I   had a little time and the moon was right , I filled some deep flats with Pro - mix and sowed super C — brassicas , thick leafy greens , and salad greens — and water them in .   Hopefully they will sprout in the nerveless weather and I will have salad green to eat before long and other greens to transplant to the garden .
