I ’ll admit it , I was a Heronista .
There is hardly a works someone who has n’t been influenced by Daniel Hinkley , his Heronswood Nursery , his collections of plants – most raised from seed collected from far off place like the Himalaya or the Andes – the rare plants – even the catalogs – those inch - thickheaded , verbose catalog that we anxiously expect for every January to entertain us on long winter nights – catalogs we would reread long before the net to keep us up former circling item , making wish lists , and hop that we could order items before they became betray out .
For those of enjoyment who are superfans of Dan Hinkley it ’s difficult to not uphold to mourn the departure of Heronswood Nursery , but moving forrad is what this book is all about , and it does so eloquently and usefully . Windcliff feel like Hinkley ’s Opus . His 9th Symphony , his understanding for being . Its combine everything he has learned over the decades from collecting plant to develop them in other garden , a palette of knowledge and stuff to use in this most stark of locations – eminent on a four flush pretermit Puget Sound .

Together , it ’s all a luxury few of us could ever ideate undertaking , but in Windcliff we can woolgather and come near to experiencing what it must be like to have such material and natural endowment within our reach .
It ’s strong to publish about Dan Hinkley and not Romance language about the old Heronswood Nursery but I ’ll render my hardest to fend off it . Windcliff – A tale of People , Plants and Gardens ( Timber Press 2020 ) tell nearly everything about Dan that we hoped for in a book , ( sans Heronswood ) . In fact , only a page and a half is dedicated to what really happened to the landmark baby’s room that changed how we garden . Dan does n’t even go into item about what really happened , but we can take that this is because of some legal reason beyond our control , or simply because he ’s bigger than that . countenance ’s give him a laissez passer and move forward .
Windcliff – A Story of People , Plants , and Gardens ( Timber Press ) is finally here and it tells the story about how Dan and his husband Robert Jones fall to be . It does get going early in Dan ’s life , echo daytime and images from childhood in Michigan all the way through to his University old age in Washington State . It touches on Heronswood , but really focuses on everything after that full stop .

Dan Hinkley redefined American horticulture and horticulture , if not global horticulture and flora and any book of account by Dan is certainly worth the investment funds . What makes this one so pleasurable it that its not a report about plant , but the tarradiddle of Dan . It touches on many topics of the horticulturist ’s biography and journeying , but mostly organized around the figure principles and chemical element found at Windcliff – their current garden located on a four flush overlook Puget Sound .
Dan ( and his husband Robert Jones a train designer ) created two garden in their lifespan ( Heronswood and Windcliff ) as well as the original Heronswood Nursery , nowHeronswood Garden – reinvent as a public garden have and manoeuver by the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe , of which Dan is has now been appointed Director of . All thing fall around .
When I ultimately met Dan a few years ago I ask him why he has n’t indite any books other than his first two ( I , like so many of you have been waiting ) . He replied that first , he did n’t really have clip ( he was about to go away on his third trip exploring in Vietnam , and that second , the process was always awful – he also add that publisher were aways bugging him to write one . I guess Timber Press won , once again .

This is a wonderful book for any plant person . It ’s attractively exemplify with Australian photographer Claire Takac photo and a few by Dan , and it ’s one of those Word of God that is readable ( seriously , every night I am read a chapter ) , and yes , it ’s visually inspiring . Timber Press has also raise another record book with excellent tone , from its figure and layout , through to the printing process and paper caliber . I take account the composition , the full - page images here and there along with just enough white space and direct – every touchpoint feels balanced and thoughtful throughout .
While I am a nurseryman growing plant in Zone 5 , there are many plants here that I can not uprise ( not that that has ever block up me ! ) but if you are wondering if this Koran is inspirational for your garden , I will mention that Dan has many potted industrial plant grouped together on walks and near entranceway that by themselves are inspiring . While many of the plants are ungrowable here in New England , at least I know that as container plants , I can achieve a similar look ( be it a tender bush from Chile that necessitate to be wintered over in a insensate greenhouse or a bulbous plant I can allow to go torpid and embroil into the root cellar ) .
Thank you Dan and Robert for doing it together , and for doing it all right . And Thank you Timber Press for sending me an cash advance transcript , even though I would have buy this one for certain !
