Propagation

Or , Spot the Seed . Echinacea germ , to be precise . I ’ve been busy collect seeds in the garden , as one does at this time of twelvemonth . I ’ve had some seed heads dry out in the shed for a workweek or two so last weekend I gave them the wag n sieve discussion outlinedhere . For the Echinacea seeds , I ended up with this .

Fantastic , imagine I , oodles of seeds . But then dubiety started to sneak in . I do n’t remember see seeded player like these before . Are the semen the long straw colored parts , the small black composition , does it weigh if they ’re separated ? I shrug my shoulder and stuck them in an gasbag anyway .

subsequently though , those nagging doubt begin to get louder . Are theyreallyseeds , or just detritus masquerade as seeds ? I was keen to encounter out , not least because I be after to send some to the Hardy Plant Society seed exchange . Imagine the pity if I sent in chaff !

Fortunately help is at paw in the twittersphere . My thanks to @NesbittF and @suebeesley who both shriek up with helpful pointers .

After some careful zooming - in , we settled on these bloke as the seeds .

How to identify Echinacea seeds

In the yellow circles are the two seeds ( two ! ) I could find in all that clutter . I tipped the lot out and sorted through by hand , thinking that now I roll in the hay what I ’m looking for , peradventure I will find some more . Er , no . Here they are , sort out into chaff on the right and seed on the left . Yup , just three .

The braggart enquiry is why are n’t there more ? I perhaps need to refine my seed retrieval system . Or as @suebeesley feared , it may be that these especial flower are sterile hybrids and do n’t produce viable seed . I have some more flower heads so will have another scissure .

I ’ll be back before long with more propagation messing . PS , take note to legal dept at Where ’s Wally publishers . Please do n’t sue me , I have used the name and picture without permission .   I do have many of your infuriating Book in the house , so feel certain dues are paid .
