Smoke as a lamb .
Uzzi and I are feel good-for-nothing for Smoke and Baarley , the random memory lambs bear this spring . Mom and Dad band them yesterday . Now they ’ll be fleece wether or else of rams .
Banding is when human beings habituate a tool called anelastratorto put a strong latex band around a dear or fry ’s scrotum to castrate him . Most people do this when lamb or kid are tiny but Mom and Dad hold back until they ’re several months old .
They await because male goats and sheep are prone to a very serious ailment calledurinary calculi . That means mineral stones can get lodge in their urinary tract and it sometimes happens if a buckling or ram lamb is castrated too young because then his urethra quit maturate and it ’s too skinny to pass mineral Stone .
If a Harlan Fisk Stone forms and then commence stuck , he ca n’t pass urine or he only dribbles a little chip . It ’s very painful , so he stretches out and tries very hard to piddle and he cries and cries . After that , they give him Banamine ( a ethical drug veterinary pain grampus ) for several days . In ten day or so his scrotum is very shriveled and ironical . Then Dad uses a scalpel to trim it off below the band .
Not every part of farm life is fun . mummy and Dad hate this line of work but it ’s an important part of keeping wethers on our farm ( between the rams and me and the Capricorn the Goat and sheep wethers , there are 22 of us and in six years no one has gotten urinary calculi yet ! ) .
We also toast a batch of sporting water ( that ’s important ) and rust a dieting that avail forbid Stone — but that ’s a subject for another blog !
