Let ’s speak natural selection horticulture for beginners . It ’s a scary subject , conceive of prostration while looking atyour lousy fresh potato harvest , but stick with me .
A few day ago , on this post , mrlespaulman state his disheartenment with his garden thus far :
“ While have a farm in my backyard that support my family is my maingoal , I ’m starting to learn that its quite a lot harder than I thoughtit would be . Between the bugs and my deficiency of preparation , I do n’t have a go at it how in the worldly concern I could cease up getting enough of a harvesting to put up adecent amount – not to refer birth enough leave over to eat right then . It always seems I end up with more spicy black pepper than I know what to do with , leafy greens full of fix , rip radishes , lilliputian onion plant , rottingsquash , and only about 15 immature beans at a clock time … lol . Any pointers onthe plan vista of survival gardening for a all over and full n00b?Thanks ! ”

There are few thing more discouraging than jumping into an exciting new venture … and then being beaten back . The trouble is usually not the hemipteran … the soil … or even wee mistakes ; it ’s usually a problem of scale .
I do n’t screw if this is the sheath for mrlespaulman , but I do cognize that in clip past I had grand and glorious garden plans that I put into execution … only to be operate over by cutworms , poor growth , lousy proceeds , drought , etc . etc . etc .
Creating strong and productive gardens usually does n’t happen right away . pattern makes perfect . begin on a wondrous plate and hoping to put away raft of produce at the oddment of the year WILL make you discouraged .

Survival gardening for beginners – start small!
I usually differentiate folks to start by growing their own salads , herb or both . If you may keep a few tummy of salad green going … and a bite of basil for the tomato sauce – you ’re officially gardening.Amazon.com Widgets
From that stop , I ’d move on to a 4′ x 4′ bed … or a 4′ x 8′. If you seek to build a short ton at once , you get burned out . You scrimp on dirt amendment . You ’re stretching compost and you ’re not cope anything well . If you’re able to supervise a 4′ x 4′ piece really well , you ’ll belike get more out of that than you would with a badly managed 4′ x 40′ patch .

Put serious , loving care into a small outer space , watch it daily , fertilizing with good stuff like kelp repast and compost , and you ’ll get to build assurance and the science you need to manage a serious survival of the fittest garden .
Now – as for having more hot peppers than you know what to do with … rotting squash … tiny Allium cepa , etc . – that ’s Florida !
Some thing are MADE to grow here . capsicum pepper plant , for instance . They love the warmth , they love the sand and they produce like brainsick – sometimes for years .

Most squash do n’t like the humidness . Rot metropolis . Onions do n’t wish the heat and the unearthly pelting cycles . radish are the same . farm them really ahead of time in the spring or flora in the late fall . Otherwise : kaput !
Green bean commonly do all mighty here , depending on variety . northerly perch bean plant often are n’t happy – and some of the bush beans tend to become bug provender pretty tight . ophidian beansare almost unkillable . Other varieties usually bring forth less .
If you ’ve got dirt that has n’t grown beans or legume antecedently , theymay be suffering from the lack of nitrogen - fixing bacterium , in whichcase I ’d feed them with diluted urine orcompost teato give them aboost .

BUT – there are crops that are really , really dear for Florida . Look around your neighbourhood . Who is arise what ? Ask them how they ’re growing it . bet at local farms – ask them what they produce and how they grow it . Go to the local extension phone office and ask them what grows right in your area . Is your area ardent enough for highly generative tropical plants ? Is it mostly field crop ? Are their woodlet ? Do lots of edibles uprise in the wild ? Ask around and learn up .
Then … take that data point with a grain of common salt , and set out experiment . I assure you : there are plants that will produce bushels of food for you . Your destination is to describe what those species are . Head noesis is fine : but really experiment is where you ’ll find aureole .
In my area , I ’ve learned ( through watching of my patch and those of others ) that these metal money by and large do well :

These crop generally do badly or merely so - so ( at least for me ):

Do n’t get discouraged . Keep reading , keep experimenting , learn to grow really good garden in a small area – and find out toeat weeds . You ’ll accumulate cognition and skill rapidly if you do n’t give up … and in a few years , you ’ll be laughing at your past harvests .
Go off and garden !
