Whether we are home working in our garden or drive down the route on holiday , garden H.M.S. Bounty burst . Enjoy the teemingness and celebrate the feeling of summertime . We are feed from the garden daily , enjoying summertime Charles Edward Berry , melons and stone fruits from the farmers ’ markets and roadside stand … and when there is meter , preserving the harvest time .

Just back from syndicate vacation in the Outer Banks . I be intimate the beach and the mode plants adapt to last in the blistering weather and juiceless sand . My favorite plant there are the ocean oat ( Uniola paniculata ) , smooth cord grass ( Spartina alterniflora ) and beach pot , which actually hold the dunes in station , the pennywort and the bright - colored blanket peak ( Gaillardia pulchella ) . The sea and sound life are fascinating – we find out porpoise , turtles , snakes , skate , gulls , egrets , heron , geese , duck , kingfisher , and the amazing pelicans – and horsehoe , blue , fiddler and ghost crabs .

On my elbow room home , I stopped by the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden in Kill Devil Hills , NC . It was a Sunday morning and I was the only man there so I had it all to myself . Though reasonably raw and small in size of it compared to some of the immense botanical garden , it was educational and I saw and acquire about plant . There is a native flora garden with the said favorite plant life and more ; there is a display garden with herbaceous plant and groundcover , a butterfly stroke garden and then an old segment , which is full of conifer and decidious trees and all kind of interesting understory shrubs and vines .

When I entered the botanical garden full of old , shade tree , the temperature seemed to drop 10 level and the aviation was moist ; it was quiet , cool and otherwordly . There were utterly gorgeous , quondam live oak tree and longleaf pine decorate with Spanish moss , palmettos , bayberry , azaleas , rhododendron , and hydrangea . good of all , I get to shoot a red bay ( genus Persea borbonia ) in real life history rather of looking at in a book . On the way home , I stopped for Currituck Sound yellowish pink and North Carolina just - picked tomatoes , Zea mays and cantaloupe vine . With my own garden squash rackets , garlic , Allium cepa , beans , okra plant , and herbaceous plant , we have been eatin ’ real goodness ! First tomato sandwich of the season – mmm - mmm good . Peach and blueberry smoothies for breakfast , tomato sandwich for lunch and garden veggies with sweet herb for supper – what more could a consistency need ?

dwelling house after just a week vacay , the garden has grow in leap and bounds ( the grass also ) and is lush and green and nearly jungle - alike . Harvested Allium sativum before leaving and the onions upon take . Be sure to cleanse off the soil from your allium bulbs ; cut the theme off – peculiarly if they are moist or moldy ; and put them in a shady place with good air circulation to bring around the skins . Allium skins need to be dried before salt away , so they do n’t mold . I allow them sit for about two weeks before lay in them in final bags in my cold room .

I will be doing two more herb / oeuvre - link road trips this summertime , one in July and the other in August . Next week , I get to drive from Maryland to Tennessee – down through the Blue Ridge and the Appalachian Mountains to the Smokies – where I will be attend and presenting at the International Herb Association Conference in a petty town call Townsend , where the hotel windows undetermined and overleap mountains and trees . We will have study trips and an array of speakers , auction , and Otto Richter Memorial Awards Dinner , and mostly fun , getting together with like - disposed people .

Last yet not least , is the twenty-sixth Women ’s Herbal Conference , which is my pet annual assemblage . I will be teaching three course there this twelvemonth : Elder , Herb of the Year 2013 ; The Creative Herbal Homewith co - author Tina Marie Wilcox;andHot , Hot , Hot : The Capsicums . It is at Camp Wicosuta in Hebron , NH , August 23 to 25th and it is a wondrous result with 500 women encampment and detain in cabins and awing classes.www.womensherbalconference .

In between , these exciting events , I will be in the garden – weeding , lacrimation , harvesting , cooking , taking pic , writing about it all and perhaps put in the sack , occasionally .
