I added the first shumac to my solid food forest right at the beginning of the undertaking almost four eld ago . Over time , more have seed themselves here and there , likely with the aid of boo .
At that clip , I calculate sumac as more of a minor aboriginal edible than as a particularly useful tree diagram .
Over the yr , however , I ’ve also found them to be a decorous chop - n - drop plant that run as a tight - growing mulch provider . The suckering habit of sumacs stand for there are always a few grow here and there , often some feet from the parent tree diagram .

It was n’t until a few days ago that I realized an additional manipulation for sumach .
I was out in the front yard , wandering through the intellectual nourishment forest , when I get a line a powerful buzzing strait overhead . At first I thought I was hearing a horde of fly on something … but then I saw that the the great unwashed of sumac efflorescence overhead were dead covered with bees and other pollinators .
It was unbelievable . The variety … the activeness … wow . For being such tiny prime , they sure attracted an abundance of buzz things .

Being the salutary documentifyer that I am , I send my wife outside with the tv camera to capture some of the activity – check out all the bees on sumac :
That kind of activity is good to see . The bees are getting fed and they ’re learning to hang out on my property .
Go bees , go !
