Looking back at the summer of gardening
Today ’s picture are from Lee Ann McAlpine , who is look at her Ohio garden this year and learn what work and what did n’t .
My husband and I moved to our 90 - year - older house two years ago . I ’m having pot of playfulness restore the garden and learning what works best in my semi - wooded backyard .
I thought I ’d make some alien dramatic event along the walkway with tropic cannas(Cannahybrids , Zones 7–10 or as cranky bulbs ) and elephant ’s ear(Colocasiaesculenta , Zones 7–10 or as a tender bulb ) , but I almost needed a matchet to use the path , so after overwintering , these plants will go elsewhere next year .

This was an already established bottom of black - eyed Susans(Rudbeckiafulgida , Zones 3–9 ) , with boxwood(Buxussp . , Zones 5–9 ) and an urn filled with begonias(Begoniahybrid , zona 9–11 or as an annual ) . I ’ve add , and will continue to add , other perennial so this seam has moreyear - troll interest .
Pumpkinsvolunteered on one side of the gazebo . I thought “ How prominent could they get ? ” They have climb over everything in their path and then some , with some smother my daylily bed and Turkish boxwood . At least there are a great deal of Cucurbita pepo , so I ’m not certain if this is a success or a failure .
The daylily seam withRudbeckia maxima(Zones 5–9 ) before the “ flack of the pumpkins . ”

On the other side of the gazebo , the garden includes ferns(Matteuccia struthiopteris , geographical zone 3–7 ) , purpleclematis , rosiness , box , and burning bush(Euonymusalatus , Zones 4–8 ) . AJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 5–9 ) looms in the background .
