SixOnSaturday

A resurgent winter has put the kybosh on any notions of it being natural spring , some chilly atmospheric condition returning this week . Mind you , it was ‘ Imbolc ’ a couple of day ago , the ancient pagan festival that marks the mid detail between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox , celebrating the lengthen days and the early sign of spring . If it ’s not quite springtime yet , it is sure enough downhill from here . I can feel the garden positively throbbing with voltage ! Time for Six on Saturday – Six things , in the garden , on a Saturday . Could be anything ! A occupation to do , a plant , a seedling , a success , a program , a efflorescence , anything at all . 1 . Clematis pruning . This is a job I plan to do this weekend . I have about 15 clematis plants dotted about , all pruning group 3 . These all flower on the current age growth so want cuttin ’ roight baaack . For some rationality it amuse me to say that in a broad west country idiom . Not sure why . For the more established plants I will aim for 15 to 30 cm from the ground , to a adequate solidification of bud . For the less well set up plant I may tailor them the right way back to the basis and rent them re - go forth from the roots .

2 . Aquilegia ‘ greenapples ’ . I grew these from come last year and tidied them up a calendar week or two ago . The new growth is coming on nicely . I desire they will bloom this year . I also hope I care them ! We shall see .

3 . Onion seedlings . Sown two week ago , these are just beginning to poke through . I expect to institute them out mid - March . I ’m go to institute out in the faculty as they get along , with up to 10 seedling per module , no cutting out at this stage . This seems like a lot , but I will harvest saltation onions from each crew after a few week , leaving 4 or 5 in each bunch to grow on to medium - sized onion plant . That ’s the possibility …

.

4 . Daffodil flower . For some reason the daffs in the front garden always blossom first , despite getting less Lord’s Day than those in the back garden . Anyhow , I have a handful of flower out , the intrepid vanguard of a low army of daffodils .

5 . Nest box . This was a flying make last weekend , just from old scrap of pallet Ellen Price Wood and a spare musical composition of roofing felt . It should suit Robins , and I go for it is out of kitten range .

6 . twine . Yup . Just string . I use it to mark out the foursquare on the veg patch . Each is one foot square , it slay the guesswork from establish out and sowing . This is helpful , but it does entail that rake or hoe the whole seam becomes wily . I have set up hired man tools , one foursquare at a fourth dimension , is the good method acting . Does n’t take long and induce up close serve me to see the weeds , soil , stones and the like .
