A banner year in a garden fueled by compost

Today we ’re in Westport , Massachusetts , visiting Carolyn Berube ’s garden .

These pictures were from 2017 , an incredible year . I do n’t irrigate my gardens and seldom fertilize , but I do use lots of compost , bought and homemade .

Heuchera‘Caramel’(Zones 4–9 ) , behindGeum‘Mai Tai ’ ( zone 5–9 ) . ‘ Mai Tai ’ is the the only geum I have n’t vote down . Thehostasare ‘ White Christmas ’ ( zone 3–8 ) and‘Krossa Regal ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) .

Tradescantia‘Sweet Kate ’ ( zone 4–9 ) a favourite moisture - lover , though it may go sleeping in a drought .

Amsoniatabernaemontana(Zones 4–9 ) provides three seasons of interest group : blue flowers in former summer , yellow foliation in fall , and tan and livid stalks in winter .

Gerbera daisies(Gerbera jamesonii)will last for years in a pot if keep really coolheaded over the winter .

Hibiscus‘Kopper King’(Zones 4–9 ) before theJapanese beetlesskeletalized the leave . It produce Brobdingnagian pink flowers in August in New England .

Iris ensata‘Maroon Giant’(Japanese iris , Zones 4–9 )

The robust over-embellished flowers ofClematis‘Etoile Violette ’ ( zona 4–8 ) provide vertical interest , with another favorite — stokesia ‘ Wyoming’(Stokesialaevis‘Wyoming ’ , Zones 5–9)—in the foreground and the diminished white peak offeverfew(Tanacetum genus Parthenium , zona 5–8 ) grow in between .
