( Not) in a Vase on Monday. Armistice Day.

Today is the anniversary of Cathy ’s meme , In a Vase on Monday . To celebrate she invites us to bring flowers into the theatre and display them in a different sort of container , so it is actually‘Not in a Vase on Monday’ . Last twelvemonth I choose a Victorian potty . Somebody else went a stride further and arranged their flowers in the lavatory .

But yesterday was the 100th anniversary of   Armistice Day so I thought something more sombre is called for . I used my gran ’s gas mask tin . Although this canister is from the Second World War , mustard accelerator pedal was first used in the First World War and this is a grim reminder .

My grandmother used this tin for storing a hole of needles , pins , thimbleful , threads , knicker elastic and good have intercourse what else . Like all her propagation she always sewed ; I suppose living through the warfare made everyone make do and mend . But she hat sewing and whenever you control the gas mask tin brought out you knew that grandmother would be in a really high-risk mood . Eventually I inherit the cannister and its jumble of content along with my grandmother ’s distaste for anything to do with stitching .   A mates of years ago I fling the substance and decided to use the tin can to hive away cum in . Today , it seems a fitting receptacle for flower to pay tribute to the millions of man who were maim or who died horribly in an lewdly pointless state of war .

Chrysanthemums have traditionally been assort with death . Christina atMy Hesperides Gardensays no one has them in the house in Italy . But I love them and I am always glad to have a cheery vase full of them on a sulky November Clarence Shepard Day Jr. . I am not too piercing on the mopheads which look like over - lacquer tomentum styles and need to be fuss over with hairnet and disbud . But I eff the lustrous daisy or pompom types . Many of them start blooming in October but as the garden is full of so much else at this time I do n’t take any posting of them until November . It ’s one of my rules , like doing the garden tour of duty in a certain order after a holiday , instead of rushing straight over to count at something eagerly await , or refusing to notice plump spring bulbs appearing until after Christmas .

Blooms are get scarce in November so we need chrysanthemum not asmementomori , but as lilliputian patch of cheer in the garden . My collection is grow but next year I hope to have even more .

Here are some of the ones I put in my tin . middling in pink we have the lovely , honest-to-god ,   double , dusty pinkChrysanthemum‘Emperor of China ’ . This blooms late   and its leave plough reddened   too .

It ’s possibly ‘ bungalow Lemon ’ It has terracotta bud opening to deep yellow-bellied flower , so not really lemony . But it ’s gorgeous . I enjoy this one which is called ‘ bungalow Apricot ’ . It becomes deeper yellowish pink with age and it has a lovely honey scent .

The relaxation of the ace in the tin are nameless passalongs . Now I have complied with Cathy ’s rules I recall I will put them into a vase . I do n’t want to seem at a natural gas masque tin all week .

The BBC ’s Antiques Road Show did a tremendous programme to mark Armistice Day . It was very moving as people brought in artefact and told essence - breaking tale about family fellow member who had lost their lives and testify with child braveness and fortitude . A protagonist of mine was amongst those with a tarradiddle to tell .

I do n’t have any stories to tell or medals to show , but after my grandparent put across away I inherit a beautiful gold huntsman watch and chain . My son has it now . Inside the typesetter’s case , cautiously preserved , was a whitened plume . I get laid that snowy feathers were send to many of the 16,000 Conscientious Objectors who were vilify and treated incredibly harshly during the First World War . Some of them were sentenced to prison or hard labour . People who   reject to be complicit in killing their fellow men were mock at and ostracised . My ancestor was understandably not ashamed of his white plume and he carefully preserved it so it would tell its own tale today .

I have to accommodate to getting furious when we are told that millions of young gentleman’s gentleman ‘ gave ’ their life for their country . In fact they had their lives cynically steal ; a whole generation go , were maim , or had their animation blighted . And all because as Wilfred Own said , they were told and believe : ‘ … The former lie , ‘ Dulce et decorum estPro Patria mori ‘ .

What a perfect combination of sentiments , object and flowers to note these two special days . And what a treasure to have that spotter with the lily-white feathering . One would like to think we have number a long agency but the rearing nationalism on the emanation suggests otherwise . My married man was a Conscientious Objector during the Vietnam War and did two age of alternate service in a infirmary in Cleveland .

A beautiful testimonial , Chloris . Very inventive , yet touching .

An inventive container for a beautiful collection . Oh ‘ Picasso ’ , my favourite .

I can always look on your mail service to include something redundant , and this one is no exception . Tying together the IAVOM day of remembrance and the Armistice ceremonial occasion was a nice touch but sum in a little family chronicle , as well as a survey of your beautiful Chrysanthemums , put it over the top . I enjoy the flowers of the mammy , if not the plant ’s foliation , but both are immaterial as the plant really do n’t care much for my mood .

Thank you for a thought plague post . The story of your grandmother ’s gas mask canister made me chuckle . I make out sewing but I can understand her hate of it as , for her , it would have been a necessity of cause do and mending – just a chore . Your chrysanthemums are gorgeous . I did make a start on growing them , plant a lovely little orange one , but the puppy scrape at it and it has n’t made a return this year . I was transfixed to scan the news report of the white plume . – conscientious dissenter were treated abominably that ’s for indisputable . I wrote about my experiences as a member of the WRAC of a picky Remembrance Day Parade for my blog yesterday – you might like to read my post too .

Wonderful remembrances on this solemn day and I sleep with the style you marked it with the gas masquerade tin can and all the mums … you have quite a collection .
