My Christmas Present To Myself.

And it ’s not burnt umber and it ’s sure not soap or hand cream . Everybody gives me soap and deal cream ; are they trying to tell me something ? I   have a whole new bed to constitute up and my Christmas present   is   a good start . I would have bought more plant but that would have meant nobody else would get a present .

In the storms a few week ago part of my fence blew down so we had to have new panels . It was a dear chance to get rid of the overgrown Buddy Holly andPyracanthain front of it . What a horrible job , I hatePyracantha , it is the most evil shrub in the garden , the thorn go right through your gloves and sit festering in your fingers .Obviously it ’s not a job for the Pianist .   I cut it down with great trouble and   direful curses and then I obtain a genial man with a mattock to get the root out . Now I have a whole new bed . Part of it is in shade , but that ’s all right I like shade plant life .

So when I was at Beth Chatto ’s recently this is what I bought . The works with orangish farewell at the back between the two fern isHeucherella‘Sweet Tea ’ .   It is a cross betweenHeucheraandTiarella . My supporter , M. hates it , as she does all orange blossom . She thinks this gloss is particularly bilious and totally miss in taste . I love it and I love the   reddish - orange grass : Uncinia uncinata‘Rubra ’ in front of it . To complete my orangish theme I have plant   the adorable tulip ‘ Princess Irene ’ .   It is orange with a purple flame , here is a photo of some I had last year .

I have some cowslips in sunset shades which I grew last year so they will go in there too . Elsewhere in the garden I have a planting   of these cowslip   brush up the peeling cinnamon bark of Acergriseumwhich I think is gorgeous . At the back of this seam I will embed some of theDigitalis ferrugineawhich has accommodatingly seeded around . I think this isDigitalis ferruginea , the trouble is I have acquire quite a few kinds of foxgloves over the years and I get them muddled up . Sometimes they get themselves muddled up and I get unusual children popping up which is courteous .

That is Pip ’s rear end on the right . He is camera - timid .

To calm all this tasteless orange down I buy two ferns . The one on the rightfulness is the dainty , maidenhair fern fern;Adiantum pedatum‘Imbricatum ’ .   The other isDryopteris wallichianawhich has black , bristly stems and adorable brilliant green fronds . I love the pretty , unripened leaf of the littleSaxifraga dentatawhich is in front of the Uncinia .

Bergenia   cordifoliais great at this time of the yr and this one ‘ Eroica ’ has adorable , glossy , burgundy bleached leave of absence . It has cryptic pinkish flower too . Oh earnest , with all that orange ? I recognize it is a disgrace but I ’m pass to have to prune the flowers off   or plant it somewhere else . I was n’t thinking about the flowers when I buy it .

I love ferns and Gunter Grass and this fiddling black pasturage , Ophiopgon nigrescensis stunning . I will plant some snowdrop in front of it and next to it the Christmas Rose , Helleborus Niger . I have some more hellebore develop from come hold back to go in here too . Behind the black grass I will imbed the windflower;Anemone multifidawith its   pale lemon flowers , like up - market buttercups .

The scarlet leaves at the back belong to aPenstemon digitalis‘Husker ’s Red ’ which I love for its beetroot ruddy leaves . It has white flowers .   On the far right by thePenstemonis the froth flower;Tiarella cordifolia‘Jeepers Creepers ’ . it has a lovely chocolate- coloured marker on the leaf . Finally , I corrupt the widow iris;Hermodactylis tuberosuswhich has   sinister - looking Negro and jade green peak .

It would have been courteous to have grease one’s palms several of each of these plant to make group , but   I ’m afraid too expensive . In the interests of economy I always have to go for a arras effect rather than broad sweeps . But if things do well then it is commonly potential to spread them . Except for the ferns ; I ’ve never tried mess up about with spore . I ’m not sure how to go about it .

manifestly the bottom is not eat up but I will impart to it as the seasons go by . I ’m not indisputable what to plant on the fencing . It would be adorable to get some suggestions .   Anyway , I am proud of with my nowadays , it was just what I wanted . And how often , with all sincerity , can you say that about a Christmas nowadays ?

Christmas present to yourself are operose to outwit as you’re able to be ensure that you will wish them 🙂 I always treat myself to a twosome of books each year to read over the gay period . What a lovely assortment of plants including one or two familiar friends and what an excellent nursery you visited to bribe them from . calculate fore to reading about how they settle in and knit together in the future tense .

I am lucky to be close to some good greenhouse , Anna . These plant come from Beth Chatto . You are right , books are also a estimable present to yourself . Nobody else seems to choose quite right when it issue forth to record and industrial plant . Chloris

I think the Tulip ‘ Princess Irene ’ may well be in flower at the same time . A bit too trashy together . My acquaintance M. would be appalled . Chloris

Those orangish Tulips are lovely ! Your description of the briery shrubs sounded conversant . That can be a atrocious line !

Yes , Prinses Irene is a beauty . call after Prinses Irene of the Netherlands apparently - hence the unmated spelling . The purple flame mean you’re able to match it with purple flowers or leafage too . And it has a flimsy aroma . So adorable in every way . Chloris

greeting from a fellow lover of orange . I , too , am constrained by budget , but happy plants will soon supply groupings , if not ‘ purport ’ , so patience is all it takes . Thanks for get out a input on Sprig to Twig , peculiarly since it lead me to your beautiful blog .

Thank you for your remark . I agree dependable plants will spread or you could pass around them . If a plant die you could be pleased that you only bought one . I enjoyed your blog . Chloris

What a nice choice of Christmas plants ! I love orange tulip too , and grease one’s palms ( and planted this fall ) tulipa ‘ Orange Emperor ’ and ‘ Apricot Impression ’ . And a botanic variety , tulipa sprengerii . After a retentive and grey winter , I ask some colouration !

I admire your option of tulips , Gisou . Growing Tulipa Sprengerii is the patsy of the connoiseur . It is a beautiful recent flowering tulip , not often available , but if it is happy it seed around . I fuck your web log , you have so many roses I have never encounter before . Chloris
