Revisiting an unusual tropical-themed garden
Michael Passarello partake in his garden in North Stamford , Connecticut , with us last week , and he happily sent in some more photos for us to enjoy today .
Michael is a garden author , designer , and photographer who has make a low - water , low - maintenance , deerproof garden emphasizing texture and coloration . His garden is divided into three areas : There is an open sunny J. J. Hill and a shady Zen garden path possible action to a decked - dining - and - greenhouse area .
Incorporating succulents and palm for the summer , Michael ’s garden is a contemplation of my gardens in the California Wine Country and the Texas Gulf Coast . Selecting plant with low - water indigence allows the garden to be left alone for period of time . Deer - insubordinate plant eliminate the need for spraying or fencing . The supply ship flora are overwintered in the greenhouse .

Colorful pots ofEuphorbia tiruncali‘Sticks on Fire ’ ( Zones 11–12 ) are in the foreground , with a palm ( Trachycarpusprinceps , Zones 9–11 ) and a pink - floweredEuphorbiamilli‘Thai Hybrid ’ ( zone 9–11 ) in the background .
A row ofAgaveattentuata(Zones 10–12 ) is backed byYucca filamentosa‘Color Guard ’ ( Zones 5–10 ) and floweringCleome‘Senorita Rosalita ’ ( Zones 9–10 or as an annual ) .
motley breeze plants ( Tillandsiasp . ) grow on a trellis .

A variegated agave is in the front , withYucca filimentosa‘Golden Sword ’ ( Zones 5–10 ) in the back .
A giantelephant ear(Alocasia macrorrhizos , Zones 9–11 ) take immense , tropical leaves to this domain .
Spineless yucca ( Yucca elephantipes , Zones 9–10 ) is unremarkably used as a houseplant , but it makes a big argument in this bed above trailing moss phlox ( Phlox subulata , Zones 2–8 ) and variegated heart-leaf ice flora ( Apenia cordifolia‘Crystal ’ , Zones 10–11 ) .

The long , narrow leaves ofAgavegeminiflora(Zones 9–11 ) almost look like an cosmetic grass in the back of this bed . Dark leaf fromCryptobergia‘Rubra ’ ( zone 9–11 ) and black mondo Gunter Grass ( Ophiopogon planiscapus‘Nigrescens’,Zones 6–11 ) counterpoint beautifully with brilliantly coloredEuphorbia tiruncali‘Sticks on Fire ’ ( Zones 11–12 ) in the foreground .
