Using containers to pull a design together
Welcome to Kevin Kelly ’s garden , where containers are used as pieces of garden art to accent the plantings .
I have been gardening in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ( Zone 6b ) , for over 25 age . My garden is on a third - acre raft in a suburban vicinity . I am not surrounded by any amazing vistas , nor do I have any borrowed views . Instead , my borders are designed to containvignettesfilled with lavish planting and often paired with a container , which may be engraft or provide empty . I find out the oculus often searches out these dada of color or structure and helps us to slow up down and enjoy the sketch presented . Here are a few samples for your enjoyment .
I eff this combination in a very shady part of the back border . Two colors ofHeuchera(Zones 4–9 ) combined with Japanesepainted fern(Athyrium niponicumvar.pictum , Zones 3–8 ) , the silver - descry leave-taking ofPulmonaria(Zones 3–8 ) , and a pretty container .

This container works well withWeigela‘My Claude Monet ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) , rudbeckia(Rudbeckiafulgida , Zones 4–9 ) , and someannuals .
Crocosmia‘Walberton Yellow ’ ( zone 6–9 ) andHeuchera‘Caramel ’ ( geographical zone 4–8 ) pair nicely with this container . Cephalotaxusharringtonia‘Duke Gardens ’ ( Zones 6–9 ) andPinusparviflora‘Cleary ’ ( Zones 5–7 ) form a nice backdrop .
This former summertime sketch include a mangave(Agavehybrid , hardiness varies by smorgasbord ) . Soon theEchinacea(Zones 5–9 ) and cosmos(Cosmosbipinnatus , annual ) will become more prominent . The large container drop anchor this sketch .

PlantingThujaoccidentalis‘Golden Emerald ’ ( Zones 2–7 ) in a bluish container give way more stature and accents the smaller perennials .
Agave‘Lavender noblewoman ’ ( zone 8–10 ) stands proud in a container place on a pedestal . It is surrounded byDiervillarivularis‘Kodiak Black ’ ( Zones 5–7),Iteavirginica(Zones 5–9 ) , andPenstemon‘Husker Red ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) .
Callicarpadicotomia‘Duet ’ ( Zones 5–8),Asclepius tuberosa(Zones 3–9 ) andRudbeckia hirta(Zones 3–7 or grown as an one-year )

A variety of succulent in a bowl are surround byAgeratum‘Blue Danube ’ ( annual ) , dinosaur kale(Brassica oleracea‘Lacinato ’ ) , andPhlox paniculata‘David ’ ( Zones 4–8 )
