Late winter–early spring beauties
We ’re travel to with Jill Blodget today .
We purchase our 5 - acre tract in Cameron Park ( Northern California , Zone 9B ) , in 1998 . We spent five eld clearing light touch , poison oak tree ( some of the toxicant oak had 2- to 3 - inch tree trunk that climbed and wound throughout the oak Tree ) , and excessive Arbutus menziesii before finally build our dwelling . Like many GPOD contributors , we have had multiple challenge in our beloved garden , includingclay soil , rocks , rock candy , and more rocks , as well asdeer , rabbits , voles , skunks , and more . But they were here first , so we allow them take a small part .
The gardens around the menage are mostly perennial that are at their peak in the summer . However , we have a few spot with previous winter – early spring gem to enjoy that are shared here .

In addition , we have enhanced some of the oakwoodlandareas with variousbulbsthat blossom from about mid - February to May . The natural max plant(Chloragalum pomeridianum , Zones 7–10 ) leaves are very similar todaffodilgreenery , so we have tucked about a thousand of them throughout the areas down the Alfred Hawthorne from our home . We have also added in some blow crocus(Crocuschrysanthus , Zones 3–9 ) and hyacinths(Hyacinthus orientalis , Zones 4–9 ) .
Camellia(Camelliajaponica , Zones 7–10 ) , with rosemary(Salviarosmarinus , Zones 7–10 ) behind it , sour well together . These are two of our first previous wintertime – former spring foul-up .
A closer view of the winterrosemaryflowers

Christmas rose(Helleborushybrid , Zones 4–9 ) , with variegate daphne(Daphneodora , Zones 7–10 ) in the background
This daphne in bloom is good by the front door , where it gives out such a welcoming , wonderful smell .
Miners lettuce(Claytoniaperfoliata , annual ) is one of the first things to amount up of course in the woodlands behind our home in thelate wintertime .

The miner ’s lettuce gets harvested day by day for the chickens to enjoy as a salad .
Snow crocus celebrate spring with their early blooms .
A beautiful daffodil(Narcissushybrid , Zones 4–9 ) fuse in with the aboriginal plant grow in the garden .

Foliage of the soap plant looks similar to that of daffodils . afterwards in spring , it will produce panicles of touchy , fragrant , white-hot prime .
