Late May is when the ruby-red poppies are blooming all over Italy , and I ’m very happy to report that my garden is now participating in this colored extravaganza .
Perhaps I should sayfinallyparticipating .
I ’ve been trying for several years to get thesewildflowersto establish in the garden , and progress was ho-hum or nonexistent for the first few years .

My wife and I collected seed seedpod during our summerhikes , but various problem , most notably my own incompetence , slowed down the project . One year I lost all the seed we had collected , and another twelvemonth I made the mistake of seal the seeded player in a jar that also had a few other wildflower ejaculate that were n’t completely dry , and the answer was a moldy raft .
This flora , genus Papaver rhoeas , is a southern Mediterraneannative plantthat has spread northwards .
Here in Italy , Tuscany seems to be where they grow most freely , but all over Italy these peak are uncouth . Riding on the string in May , one can see miles of train rail covered with the ruby-red flowers , and many wheat plantings are so infested that huge fields are almost completely covered in red .

All this colouration draws artist like flies , and paintings of red poppy extend meadows are almost a cliché tourist ware .
Do n’t leave About the SeedsThe seeds of this poppy are tasty , and are often collected for culinary use , but they are much small than the poppy seminal fluid one realize on muffins at Starbucks .
Most of the poppy source used in cooking around the world are not from this coinage , but fromPapaver somniferum(the diacetylmorphine poppy ) and other type . This red poppy has spread northwards over much of Europe and is the poppy mention in the far-famed Flanders Fields poem . These red poppies are still connected with many World War I remembrance ceremonies .
propagate PoppiesI had two niggling poppy plants in the garden last year , and I save those flora after they dried up in summer , pulling off the seed pods when they were brown and dry . I planted the seeds in the decline ; or rather I stand at the top of the garden and throw the miscellany of crushed seed pods down over the patio below .
The result this natural spring was an amazing amount of minuscule poppy plant all over the garden . In former May the plants started flowering , and by this weekend , the garden was ablaze with the bright red flower .
divertingly , I also had to reduce huge quantity of the poppy down to make way for spring planting . This same plant that I had been so hopefully rear has now become a peskyweedin the garden and I had to remove a whole bunch of mature blooming plants along with all the other weeds when I was ready to start establish .
I ideate that next yr I ’ll have even more poppies , and the hillside garden will be completely cover with red flowers .
It would n’t surprise me if a few artists show up with their easels next May .
