A garden with something for everyone
My name is Kat , and I ’ve been gardening for two years in a small town in Ontario , Canada . Our village is in a rural area , and I ’m very lucky to have a backyard with farmland grunge that has the consistency of chocolate patty — digging is really fun . I ’ve been expanding existing bed and reach raw ones , with a goal of choosing plants that will survive geological period of summer drought with minimal pee and attract wildlife and pollinator to our yard . Whenever I can , I contain purple and blue bloom — our daughter ’ preferent colors .
We live in an area of town where none of the 1000 are fenced in . We back on to our neighbor ’s side , which is line with mature evergreens and walnut Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , and our repeated garden is a skip and a jump from our other neighbor ’s abundant recruit vegetable bottom and wild flower patches . Children , cat , bee , and butterfly drift freely through our connected space .
I turned 40 this class , and my family unit gave me garden - related present , include a velociraptor done in metalworking and a garden arch . These lush Hosta are a consummate cover for my dinosaur to stake out the birdbath for unsuspicious robins . This cracks me up every clip I look at it .

I pass the winter planning my planting , and I could n’t translate enough about the workplace of Piet Oudolf , Nigel Dunnett , and Jinny Blom . This image is an ode to their design style .
Another planting inspired by these important designers .
And one more .

This ‘ Royal wedding party ’ poppy(Papaver orientalis‘Royal Wedding ’ , zona 3–7 ) really does n’t go at the very front of the garden bed , and it only survived for a mean solar day , but I knew my youngest would love it for being so huge and so very purple . At least I got a picture before the petals swim away in the fond summertime air .
Our local conservation authority offer wildflower kits for pre - order , with an compartmentalization of aboriginal plant that would take no lacrimation after their first class . This photograph show the pitch-black - eyed Susan(Rudbeckia),hoary vervain(Verbena stricta , Zones 4–7 ) , and one bloom of butterfly weed(Asclepias tuberosa , Zones 3–9 ) at the front . From these kits I am also spring up furious chives , wild bergamot , columbine , lupines , Liatris spicata , and bee balm , and I have added my own planting of false indigo in the same beds ( not local to our region as far as I know but not too far away , and the taproots make them entirely ego - sufficient even when we have n’t seen rainwater in week ) . These bed are still filling in , but the works are doing well and always have airborne visitant .
My garden is just begin , and I am already map out out a new plane section for next twelvemonth . I really enjoy have up early before everyone else and heading outside with a cupful of coffee to spend time in the garden . I might weed , I might read , or I might just sit and look at it and finger thankful for what ’s growing .
