Manhattan isn’t all concrete, steel, and glass
Today ’s pic are from Don Burgard .
My wife and I recently spent a few Clarence Shepard Day Jr. at her babe ’s flat in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan . Kate and I meet as graduate students in Manhattan in the late 1980s but have n’t lived in the city since . In our mini - holiday in late June , I was struck by the beautiful gardens that are just minutes away from my sis - in - law ’s apartment . First is theHigh Line — a long - abandoned elevated railway transformed into a 1.5 - mi park with garden designed byPiet Oudolf . The High Line opened in 2009 and has since become one of New York ’s top tourist attractiveness . Then there isLittle Island , an artificial island in the Hudson River accessible by a pair of short bridges , which just open up in May . Along with grassy area , walking paths , and an amphitheatre , this park packs a batch of industrial plant life into its 2.4 demesne .
But while I had been on the High Line before and had been advance ahead of time to shoot the breeze Little Island by my sister - in - police , the gardens at Hudson Yardswere a surprisal . Hudson Yards is a gleaming unexampled admixture of skyscrapers , performance venues , and outdoor place — with some lovely and lush garden beds peck in the midsection . put plants and skyscraper together is n’t just novel , but the general density of Manhattan makes a place like Hudson Yards really stand out . Here are a few of the exposure I take during the 92 - degree morning of our sojourn .

Just looking at these trees and garden beds made me feel cool . The odd - looking structure in the background is the Vessel , a structure made from a serial of interconnected staircase and a great way to get a bird’s - eye view of the greenery below .
And here ’s the bird’s - optic view .
Now that the city is largely functioning normally again , here ’s my estimate to bring riders back to the metro : more plant around the entrances ! Having ride the subway on a regular basis in the former 1980s and early 1990s — and entered and croak pile of stops that were functional but far from beautiful — I was cease in my tracks when I look this . I love how the Japanese forest grass(Hakonechloamacra , Zones 5–9 ) is shed out over the rail and onto the route , and the persicaria(Persicariaamplexicaulis , Zone 4–7 ) blooms remind me of fireworks exploding — such ebullience for a simple subway stop !

The tall construction surrounding these hydrangeas(Hydrangea arborescens , Zones 3–9 ) furnish enough shade for them to thrive , even during a heatwave .
This sea of coneflowers(Echinacea purpurea , Zones 4–9 ) provide lots ofnectarand pollen for bees and butterfly — and if watching them snack make you hungry , you may just visit the intellectual nourishment cart in the setting .
I ’ll eat up with one photo from the High Line . This guesswork is representative of what I trust is the future tense not just for New York but for all cities . It looks like the High Line ( left ) is unable to contain all that wonderful flora life and so it is shed over the edge to meet a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree rising up from the street storey . And then after a little gap , the garden continue on the rooftop to the right . Finally , if you look in the upper left , you ’ll see yet anotherrooftop garden .
