Cherry has visited the garden in Kingston , Washington several times in the past ( Check out her previous Heronswood submissions : The Woodland Garden at Heronswood , The Blue and Yellow Garden at Heronswood , andA Bog Garden ) , and we get to see even more from her late trip . Here are fall scenes ( end of October 2024 ) at the hornbeam hedge(Carpinus betulus , Zones 4–8)and Bog Garden atHeronswood Garden . The lovely Dahlia pinnata heyday court is designed byRiz Reyes(Assistant theatre director at Heronswood)of class . The plant compounding is deserving emulating next summertime .

The focal point and main attraction of the peat bog garden is of course of instruction the small but salient pond hem in by a overplus of hurler plant . The unbelievable arch of the hornbeam hedging that beleaguer make an eye - catching backdrop .

To lure worm into their retentive hole , pitcher flora have leaves that rival the brightest blush . This bright blank diverseness with deep ruby-red veins appear to be crimson or “ whitened - topped ” twirler plant ( Sarracenia leucophylla , Zones 6–9 ) . Though native to Georgia , coastal Florida , Mississippi and Alabama , the plants seem to be thriving in the Pacific Northwest .

A closer looking at at these fascinating works allow us to see the intricate item in those ruffled leafs . It ’s not surprise that tent flap and other insects get tricked by these dazzling rule .

As with many public gardens , the structures around Heronswood are just as pleasing as the many plants on exhibit . Wooden trellises tolerate for plants to envelop the space and extend the verdure .

Another angle of the bog garden , and more of those awe-inspiring arciform hedge . I love that the hedges create a secluded space that feels private , while still allowing for a purview of the garden full of leaf beyond .

Beyond the bog garden is the courtyard of dahlia beds that Cherry refer in her intro . The arched hornbeam hedge also culminate in this expanse with a simple , empty planter pot standing as an elegant focal point .

The dahlias on showing appear to be the striking ‘ Bishop of Dover ’ ( Dahlia‘Bishop of Dover ’ , Zones 9–11 , with tubers grind up and overwintered in cold-blooded climates ) . inscrutable umber - colored prow produce equally dismal foliage and light bloom that belt down with contrast . The flowers are mainly white , but if you look closely you may see their subtle , pink / lavender flush .

In the previous - season garden , dahlias provide lasting blooms that are normally a perfect compliment to the modify foliage . Riz , of course , create lovely combinations of clumps of red fountain eatage .

Lastly , a close - up of that understated focal point toilet reveals a populace of color variation that ca n’t be see from further off . A really successful focal point does both , popping in the landscape painting from far away as well as draw you in to look nearer and enjoy its more subtle details .

As I alluded to above , Cherry sent photos from a few unlike share of her slip to Heronswood , and the bog garden is only the beginning . Tomorrow , we will be returning to the garden with Cherry to see even more of the downslope plants that were on display .
