I wish there was a way to capture what I saw this Sunday evening in the intellectual nourishment forest .
We had just come home from attending a service at church fete the reclamation ( and yes , we unquestionably sungA Mighty Fortress is Our God ) . Rachel function down the drive to shut the gate … and did n’t come back . After getting the kids inside and not seeing her show up again , I went to find her .
She was standing at the bound of the drive , staring into the edge of the solid food forest .
“ What is is , ” I asked , “ are you okay ? ”
“ There are firefly … everywhere in the grass ! ”
I looked and sure enough … footling head of light were scattered across the mulch and beneath the bush and trees . It was unbelievable . Here and there , blinking slowly and fading .
They did n’t see quite like fireflies to me , so I make down and cautiously scooped one up , then took it inside for a photo .

Yes , they ’re not really pretty ( they look a lot like isopod , AKA woodwind instrument louse , albeit with six legs rather of dozens ) .
I wish well you could really see what the glowing of these creatures looked like . I tried shooting lots of shot outside to catch the incandescence but my camera just would n’t pull it off .
Unlike my awesome photoshop above , these little Florida glow worms only glowed at the very baksheesh of their rears , standardized to a Pyrophorus noctiluca but with a pocket-size , dimmer light .
Still , seeing them scattered here and there through the food forest was magical .
I ca n’t tell you how many interesting and marvellous species have popped up in my solid food wood since I quit mop and started adding layers and layers of species , not to mention log , mulch , pool and other home ground .
The other day a copper - colour Gaul of a specie I ’d never seen before was hanging out by the path :
I ’ve never seen a Gaul that colour – it really depend like it was made of metal .
Marvelous things happen when you add habitat .
( And yep – the house and food forest are still for sale . A few folks have nibble , but no bite yet . It ’s $ 135,000 and has flock of space indoors and out … and now you know it even come with free radiance worm ! )
Really coolheaded . I went out again tonight looking for them and they were still glowing off . What a nerveless thing to chance upon .
