DIY Raised Garden Bed With Privacy Wall
As you may tell by the name of the labor , I built this to have both a grandiloquent , raise garden seam and fencing to impart privacy in my back garden .
The plan is dim-witted : build a raised bed with 4×4 post and make the two back Emily Post improbable enough to support horizontal fencing add-in , basically work a privacy wall .
After building the original box , I liked the privateness aspect so much , I added “ annexe ” on either side for redundant privacy . I stagger their placement to keep it unchanging and add interestingness .

I ’m an amateurish woodman and often build thing without following plans , just reckon it out as I go . But , so many of you have spell to quest item since I primitively shared this so I have drawn up some plans .
My actual raised bed has a step of 8×4 - feet . Many of you have asked for 6×3 specification so I have included cloth leaning for both sizes .

1Video Overview
This video express an overview of how I built my combo put up garden bed and privacy fence :
2Materials
I usedpressure - address woodthat derive in a ‘ sienna ’ brown color .
To avoid waste Grant Wood , I attempt to create my designs sour withstandard baseball bat sizesso there are as few barren cuts as possible . For this task it means creating a box to match your fence board lengths . For example , my unit is 8 - feet broad so the privateness fencing is 8 - feet wide as well .
DISCLAIMERI’ve done my in force to provide accurate measure but I can not guarantee them . Please double check before buy or cutting baseball bat .

deal lumber is sell by “ nominal ” names that are different than the actual size of the wood you buy .
Check yours to confirm the size ( length , width , and thickness ) . These are the factual sizes of baseball bat sold in my area .

3Prepare Your Location
Prepare the location where you will be place the box . You will need at least 6×3 - feet or 8×4 - foundation of level ground , depend on which size of it box you build up .
You will also need enoughsoilto meet the box . I had recentlybuilt a pondand used some of the soil from the excavation for all but the top 12 - inch which I amended with compost .

4Assembly
As you make for , consider where you will attach screws both for maximal grasp and best appearance . For some of the add-in , you’re able to attach the screws from inside the boxful to hold back them .
The dispute between a well build and a high-risk one is howsquare and levelit is ! Check your work as you go . It will face professionally - built if you do this .
The footmark of the raised bed is 6 - feet by 3 - feet ( for alternative 1 ) .

The two tall 4×4 post go at the back corner and the two unretentive 4×4 post go at the front .
The post will be inset 1.5 - inches ( the breadth of a 2×8 ) to allow way for the fence board to neatly bunt up against each other .
Work from thebottom upby facing up the bottom of the first board with the bottom of each post . sum up the remain two boards .

commemorate where you ’ve placed your screw so you do n’t pass into them when attach the street corner covers .
Repeat for back section using the tall 4x4s .
The front and back box section also have vertical 2x4s at their middle gunpoint to further support the horizontal gameboard .

Mark the midsection of each unit and attach the 2x4s from the interior so the roll in the hay are not visible on the outer fencing table .
With the front and back sections assembled , it ’s time to assemble the loge by attaching the shorter horizontal control board on each side .
Add the side boards , starting from the bottom up , attaching them precisely between the front and back sections . They will check nicely behind the overhang of the long front and back board .

Complete both side .
Now you have the introductory box .
bond a 2×4 across top back of box . The top edge of the circuit board should run along up with the top border of the top horizontal table . The aim of this circuit board is to tot spare support for the mitered top we ’ll total later .

Attach the front turning point cover first , send the front circuit card 5/8 beyond the edge of the front incision .
Add side covers , edge each one up behind the front cover overhang .
For back corners , use the shorter patch ( 18.25 - inch ) at the back , attaching each one right below the 2×4 keep piece with their edges aligned with the corner .

Finish by supply the final two corner piece ( 21.75 - column inch ) at back of sides , extending 5/8 - inch beyond the boxful to end flush with the back corner pieces .
Plan your mitered boards so they hold back the circumference of the top of the loge on all sides including the front 2×4 position .
The measurements I ’ve provided are approximate .

If you do n’t require to miter them , butted straight end are o.k. too .
I lined my lift bed with heavy dutylandscape fabricbecause I had some on hand . It may help extend the life of the box — I go for . If you want to do this , staple it in place before adding the mitered whirligig .
Use a redundant 2x4x6 ( or 8) to insure the back posts in position so you could add together the privacy boards without worrying about movement .

part at the top of the tall posts , bond your fencing boards . Line up the top sharpness of the top plank with the top border of the postal service and be sure they extend ( overhang ) equal distances from the post boundary . Double check the boards are level before stop up them .
bind remain boards , working your path down . Leave a slender gap to allow for board expansion from humidness .
You may also want to add a 2×4 along the middle , back of the privacy wall to prevent warp .

5Extend the Privacy Wall
These next photos show the development of my concealment wall .
The “ wings ” are staggered which provides near stableness and a less boxy appearance .
The offstage boards are attached to the back of the principal box posts but in front of their own spot .

I also vary the heights and widths to tally more interest .
For some of the post support ( next picture ) I made cylinders of hardware textile , tied keep out with cable ties , and fill with Harlan Fiske Stone .

6Alternate Design
I can not tell you how fun it is when someone e-mail me to share photos of a project inspired by something I have shown on this site .
Helen Prier did a beautiful job on her edition of these lift beds with secrecy walls . It ’s a huge labor , but so worthwhile if you have a yard lacking character and secrecy .
And it is a mythical way to workaround any fence height restrictions simply by building a little high within your own property .

A few details to mark :
Here are a few photos Helen shared of the building process .
This first photo shows a coarse billet : a expert size garden space but no real definition to the space .

The taller raised beds were built first , concluded with the tall 4×4 support posts .
mark how the horizontal privacy boards are placed ? They alternate between the front and back side of the 4×4 posts . It ’s a good fashion to break up the effect so it looks more interesting than a hearty wall of wood the whole elbow room across .
you could see it was great line but wow , it looks dandy . The interchange wall arrangement , unlike smear colors , and diverge boxwood sizes really transmute it into something particular .

And what a fabulous situation to get really creative with graphics and plants .
Thank you , Helen for divvy up your wonderful labor . Well done !
