The intensely fragrant Cestrum nocturnum portion out it ’s scent only at nightSince I am so meddlesome working on my book on design trend , which is due to the newspaper publisher this week , and with my problem , I will just concisely walk through the garden and describe some notable events of the week since it is now 1:00 AM and I just got back from work . I will be lucky to get sentence to even water the glasshouse tomorrow good morning before my minute commute back in to work , ugh .
It ’s nearing the end of August , and even though the nights are cool , we are still get ardent sunny days with temps in the 80 ’s . This Cestrum nocturnum is a raw flora for me , and one which I will always grow , since I am a screwball for fragrancy . This plant really delilvers is punch only at Nox . Last week , I had fogotten that it was in a pot and plunged into the ground in front of the greenhouse . In the dark , we could smell it and could n’t figure out where the sent as coming from . Now on the deck , on this glorious morning , it had scented the ardent , humid evening air after last night thundershower all nighttime . The entire family reek of Jasmine , ( It ’s coarse name is night Jessamine).Rebutia ‘ Red Riding Hood’The cactus collection is still institutionalize out an occaisional bloom . Most of the Rebutias flush for us in June , this August stunner is brilliant fuscia , althought its cultivar name is Red Riding Hood . Scabiosa for cut flowersThis spring I was inspired by Wayne Winterrowds excellent book , Annuals and Tender Plants for North American Gardens(Random House),a must have . So I attempted to farm many of the more unusal or lesser grow annuals , the type that shrivel up require to be sown in situ or are not carry by retailers at all . One of the ‘ lost ’ previous humankind annuals is Scabiosa , a great cut flower which has had bow last over a workweek in my position . It ’s wiry halt gimmick and twist graciously and are attractive , this , a survival of a color mix which I lost the name of is attractive with its blend of burgundy , mauve and white . Boöphane distichaOne of the rarer plants in the collection , this Boöphane disticha , ( pronounced Boo - off - ah - knee),a gainsay to grow bulb from South Africa which is highly posionous , even it ’s dried leaves on the dormant bulb when touched drive apathy in my finger so I must work with rubber glove even to repot it when dormant . I have it positioned up high outdoors , , so that the click ca n’t get it . Tribesmen in Africa make poison for darts from this lightbulb . I was advise after ‘ investing ’ in it , that I would be lucky to get it to grow . So far , so well . I was able to waken it out of dormancy , a job in itself . No , if only I can coax it to bloom . It is institute in an passing degenerate draining mixture of keen guts , perlite and rock , and in a large container of about 10 gallon . The plant is ill-famed for not liking to be repot , and it is long lived . A view of some of the caudiciform plants in the collection
Summer is the active tiem for these caudiciform flora . Here is an other break of the day survey of some of the best . Kept pearl dry in the wintertime , these plant life all have piss - storage parts above the stain . During the summer , they can take a surprising amount of weewee .
