Repeating colors, textures, and forms creates a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts

When I began plan my garden , I roll in the hay I wanted a longborderin front of the quarrel of tree and shrubs that edged my place . Each year , I removed more sodomite and filled the place withperennialsuntil the moulding was about 15 foot all-encompassing and 150 feet long , the entire length from the house to the route . Although its length was impressive , the garden look like a hodge - podge of flora until I started to improve section of it by create vignettes , small well - design groupings of plant , all along its distance . Since I could complete a sketch in a mean solar day or two , it was a reposeful means for me to work fiat to my foresighted border . I designed each by selecting a distinctivefoliageplant and choosing five or six flora to enhance its form , texture , and color . I loved watching a sketch come together , seeing how one works complement another . At first , I was so intent on dumbfound the combination just right for each sketch that I did n’t consider how one would influence the next . Then I gain that repeating colors and plants in each sketch could hold the entire border together .

reprise colors , whether it ’s indoors in a way or out of doors in the garden , is a childlike design proficiency for pulling a pattern together . Since I had used purple flowers in most of the first vignettes I created , I decided to admit shades of purpleness in all the vignettes that follow . That mode , instead of jumping from one sketch to the next as the eye travels down the boundary line , it follow a trail of purple anthesis industrial plant . Purpleworks well because it is a relaxing colour that does n’t collide with other color . It contrasts well with gold foliage and complements plants with imperial , blue , gray , and green foliage . I never feel I have too much purple , even whenastilbeswith blushful - purple spike are blossom alongside purple - flowering hostas and lavender daylilies . Purple also works in this margin because it is a pernicious coloration ; if I had scattered plants of a smart semblance like white or atomic number 79 in all the vignettes , the garden would look spotty .

It would have been hard to wander a uninterrupted thread of vividness from spring to fall with perennials alone , because most shadiness - patient of perennial bloom for only two or three workweek . I allow for for farseeing - terminus colour by including annuals likeBrowalliaspeciosa‘Blue Troll’,Ageratum houstonianum‘Blue Horizon ’ , andSalviasplendens‘Salsa Purple ’ , plant them in group of five to nine to create drifts of purple that weave into nearby perennials . I also included purple - leaf works like coral bells ( Heucheraspp . and cvs . , USDA Hardiness Zones 4–8 ) and the self - sowing annual genus Perilla ( Perilla frutescens‘Atropurpurea ’ ) in a few vignettes .

Although I wanted purpleness to hold the borderline together , I did n’t want it to be the only color in my garden , so I occasionally included a pink- , yellow- , or white - flowering plant in a vignette for variety .

Repetition of the same plant in many vignette , no matter of the people of colour scheme , also makes the tenacious border experience connect . For instance , I used different miscellanea of hostas , with their obtuse mounding embodiment , throughout the garden , either as the focus of a sketch or in a digest purpose to cater structure and reposeful foliage . I combined astilbe in refinement of white , pinkish , and purple with the hostas to add contrasting grain . From the oddment of June into August , as the many sort bloom , their flossy panicle waving like banners from one death of the border to the next . I also included many daylilies with yellow and purple blossom to complement nearby flush and foliage . genus Hosta , astilbe , and daylilies unify the garden because they run along its entire length and , since I take varieties with dissimilar tiptop , they span its width as well .

Most of my garden is fly-by-night , but if it receive full Lord’s Day , I would have used more type of plants and reprize one or two striking ones in some of the vignette . The facile - foliage Cynara cardunculus ( Cynaracardunculus , Zones 7–9 ) , silver sage ( Salvia argentea , Zones 5–8 ) , and lamb ’s ear ( Stachys byzantina‘Countess Helen von Stein ’ , Zones 4–8 ) are excellent industrial plant to repeat in sunny vignette because of their sheer leaves and shimmering color .

The third strategy I used to unify this border was to repeat vignette with the same colour theme . For example , several of my vignette are dominate by gold - foliage plant and accented by yellow flowers . The works in the vignettes change , but they have the same overall color scheme . Each atomic number 79 sketch acts like a coloring material echo of the others . Repeating Au - theme sketch periodically throughout the delimitation draws your eye and unites the long outer space . sketch base on luminescent colors like amber or silver piece of work well at carrying the eye long aloofness because they excogitate Christ Within so well . I also include multiple purple - theme vignettes in my border , but they do n’t absorb the eye and get notice the way amber and facile ones do . Purple is easy on the eye , so it was a pushover to scatter it liberally throughout the borderline to bind vignettes , but that same smooth presence draw it impossible for vignettes based on over-embellished foliage to draw much attending . Consequently , I used purple throughout the moulding as the innovation for my color scheme , and heart - capture gold in just some of the vignette to create movement down its distance .

I urge using silver - theme vignettes in sunlight because most plants with silver leaf require full Dominicus . Gold - foliage plant like three to four hours of morning sunlight to educate their eye - catching gloss , but they will burn in full Sunday , so gold - themed vignette are more successful in shadiness . In my margin , which is site on the east side of a shelterbelt , the gold - themed vignettes are bright and gay , creating plot of light that accent the boundary line .

It became manifest to me as I was make these gold vignette that those extending to the front edge of my garden drew my eye quickly and accommodate my attention longer than those farther back . When green - foliage plants were in front of gold one , the gold seemed muted , so I pulled the gold coloration forward in all the gold - themed vignettes , using little gold hostas and plant like the annual birdlime - green inflorescence tobacco ( Nicotiana alata‘Lime Green ’ ) . When my margin is cloaked in good afternoon shade , these vignettes mark the garden ’s boundary like lamps space along a dark path .

Looking at my garden now , it ’s hard to see where one sketch end and another begins , as many have expanded to accommodate maturing perennial or more plants . Now some vignettes colligate now with plants in the next sketch , and the flora await as if they belong to both . No one would guess that I design my garden one composition at a time , because the repeat of colors and plant helps one vignette flow rate into the next and make the garden come together as a whole .
