Jim Adkins ’ love of birds start when he was a young boy . He was first introduced to chickens when his founder brought home a flock ofCornish CrossandRhode Island Redchicks , and his passionateness for these hiss raise from there as he became knotty with a 4 - H golf-club and began breed and exhibiting chickens , eventually going on to judge poultry himself .

As an grownup , Adkins started work in the poultry diligence , supervising five ranches that raised more than 450,000 turkeys every year — commercial , industrialized turkeys that could n’t even mate naturally .

He began traveling across North America , instruct workshops and spread the “ poultry gospel ” as he encouraged the economic consumption of sustainable heritage breeds for egg and marrow production — not just as pets or novelties .

It was at one of these workshops in 2010 in Winston - Salem , N.C. , that a group of farmers at the Carolina Stewardship Annual Conference became concerned in raising and marketing standard - breed heritage breeds , and asked Adkins to mentor them . This resulted in the establishment of the Carolina Heritage Poultry Coalition , which quickly farm into a national organization now called the Sustainable Poultry web , or SPN - USA , of which he is the founding father and president .

The official mission of SPN - USA is , “ equip granger , chef and people to multiply , turn and commercialise sustainable flock of standard - bred poultry . ” It has become a valuable resourcefulness for many fowl farmers , focusing on training and mentoring them so that they can effectively   interpret and follow up sustainable practices .
