Making a magical space
We ’re impose with Jay Sifford today . We ’ve confab his personal garden in North Carolina before ( Summer in Jay ’s Garden ) , but today he ’s sharing a garden he created for one of his garden excogitation client :
I have been working with this client for over four years . She follow to me wanting acontemporary gardenwith an Asian feel , something that would complement her modern-day home . Phase 1 is shown here . It consists of afront yard garden , carved into a hillside in full sun . She wanted to have a garden near the street , a place where she could sit in the evenings with a glass of wine and greet neighbors as they walked by . The garden is full of color andtexture , functioning as an riotous and immersive political platform upon which to live out the good life .
Highlights include a seating sphere with stone invest wall , stone whole tone that are interplanted to soften the hardscape , and an Asiatic - inspireddry creek bedthat morphs into a real waterfall that empties into a smallpond . “ Magical ” is the most coarse adjective we get a line used to describe this peculiar garden .

A staggered installation of long stone steps was necessary . They are interplanted with low spread and mounding works to soften the face and to allow for a cohesive coloured and textural garden . The street - side area is anchor by a contorted filbert(Corylusavellana‘Contorta ’ , Zones 4–8 ) .
A finish - up of one domain shows ‘ Golden Pacific ’ shore juniper(Juniperusconferta‘Golden Pacific ’ , Zones 6–9 ) , grim dune lyme grass(Leymus arenarius‘Blue Dune ’ , Zones 3–10 ) , ‘ Orange Rocket ’ barberry(Berberisthunbergii‘Orange Rocket ’ , Zones 4–8 ) , Procumbens nana juniper(Juniperus procumbens‘Nana ’ , Zones 4–9 ) , and a thunderhead pine(Pinusthunbergii‘Thunderhead ’ , zona 5–8 ) .
Vertical stone pillars dally nicely with the erect itinerary illumination to make an initiation that draw elements from the home ’s architecture down into the garden , particularly the porch column .

I love to plantIris ensata‘Variegata ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) . I plant it for the leafage , not the blooms . Spiky is a “ happy form ” that juxtaposes mounding and horizontally grow plants for an interesting composition .
Here is a wider prospect of the master part of the front garden that shows the context . Using the large orthogonal Harlan F. Stone steppers did not visually cut the yard in half like a substantial pavement would have done .
One of the most fascinating feature of speech of the garden is the Asian - urge dry brook seam that turns into a head for the hills falls . The stone , meticulously stacked on bound , create the trick of cascade flowing urine .

This photo shows the modulation point between wry brook bed and “ wet waterfall . ” The engine room was a flake tricky but works well .
The 2 - foot - gamy waterfall plunge into a small but deep pond . This make some terrific ambient racket that adds to the tranquil notion of the garden , even though it was exposed to the street .
Here is a glimpse of phase 2 in the backyard . The client asked for a miniature mountain range that included a waterfall . I was a bit unbelieving as I think to myself : “ This could either go really right or really wrong . ” luckily , it blend “ really right . ” The mountains are planted in a way that mimics green batch of trees , with ‘ Blue Rug ’ juniper(Juniperus horizontalis‘Blue Rug ’ , Zones 6–7 ) to pluck up the blue coloring of the Blue Ridge Mountains and dwarf mondo(Ophiopogonjaponicus‘Nanus ’ , Zones 6–11 ) , along with black escallop ajuga(Ajugareptans‘Black Scallop ’ , Zones 3–10 ) to simulate shadow on the mountain side . Eventually this domain will host a blackened cedar Nipponese pavilion that will be cantilevered out over the large uracil - molded pond .
