Working on the little backyard of a Victorian town house in San Francisco ’s Noe Valley neighborhood , landscape painting architectChristopher Yatescreated a minimalist space over with a dining area and built - in barbecue . The customs duty COR - TEN - brand barbecue shelf was mounted on a concrete wall , beside an herb planter and above an ipe - wood deck . A small amount of color added to the paving gives the space a slightly warmer tone , and low - maintenance , drouth - liberal succulents , grasses and restios surround the dining area .

Q : What were your client ’ aim ?

A : They wanted a minimalist garden that nevertheless come across their living and entertaining need : a dining expanse large enough for six to eight citizenry , a built - in barbeque , a square barrier paries on the property line , a play area and sandbox for their new-sprung baby , and a patio for the guest cottage .

Q : What are the kitchen ’s master features ?

A : The ‘ kitchen ’ is really just a built - in barbecue — it is essentially a COR - TEN - steel box that is mounted on the concrete wall at the property line , with a custom concrete countertop and a unsullied - steel countertop barbecue . Of of course , there is also the adjacent dining space .
Q : Where is the barbeque placed within the context of the garden ?
A : It ’s centrally locate — designed to be close to the kitchen in the main house and just off - center from the out-of-door dining mesa .

Q : Were there any challenge with space or facility ? If so , how did you figure out them ?
A : This is a very small garden , and space was extremely besotted . The challenge was to make the place feel larger than its actual size and still meet the node ’s goal . Thus , the barbecue was project as a cantilevered unit that required minimal space ( only 2 feet deep ) , and with the 2 - foot - wide planter on either side of the barbeque , the social unit float above the plantation owner .

Q : What brand of appliance did you use ?
A : We used the 30 - inchFire MagicDeluxe Countertop Grille , as this was the only manufacturer we could find oneself with a countertop unit that would fit our program .
Q : Were there any extra elements that you tailor-make or retrofit to work for this out-of-door kitchen intent ?
A : We place a custom COR - TEN - steel herb plantation owner next to the barbecue ; it ’s designed for relief of access while preparation .
